Being Childish

I think one of the biggest reasons Walt never lost his sense of imagination was because he had such a fond grasp of his childhood. So much inspired him, from his creativity and art, to his surroundings, especially the town of Marceline, Missouri.

Listen to this speech he made in his return to Marceline. Can you hear the child in him coming out?

Here's hoping we can all find a way to exercise our imagination more....

Condolences

My deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and coworkers of Austin Wuennenberg, the 21 year old Monorail pilot whose life was tragically cut short in a fatal Monorail accident at Walt Disney World this past Sunday morning.

No pictures, no video, no speculation here. Just a sincere "I'm sorry."

The Liberty Tree

One of my favorite books of all time happens to be Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes. For a great fictional read on Colonial life right before the American Revolution, I cannot recommend it enough, even if it is a book usually found in the young adut section of book stores.

The Disney version does not do the book justice - way more within the story needs to be told. However, "The Liberty Tree" is a great song from the movie, and I couldn't think of a better time than Independence Day weekend to share. Enjoy!!!

Disney legend Wayne Allwine, the voice of Mickey Mouse passed away on May 18th. I have to say, this one hit me hard. He was not the original Mickey voice (that would be Walt), but he was the Mickey MOuse of my generation. While I know that Mickey has only been temporarily silenced, I still feel a great sadness, but take solace in the fact that his work will live on. I'm reminded of that everytime my little one watches "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse."

Two days after Allwine's passing, Jim Hill Media ran this article, and I can't think of a better tribute article to post:

Wayne Allwine, the man behind the mouse, is gone. This sweet 62-year-old passed away on Monday due to complications from diabetes.

Now some folks will tell you that Wayne was one of only three men to voice Mickey Mouse (with the other two being Walt himself and veteran Disney Studios sound man Jimmy MacDonald). Which isn't entirely true. At the time that Allwine initially began recording for the Mouse, there were actually a number of folks within Walt Disney Productions who did Mickey's voice. MacDonald provided Mickey's vocals for the studio & television side of things, Jack Wagner (i.e. the official voice of Disneyland) spoke for the Mouse in the theme parks and arena shows, while Hal Smith did Mickey's voice for Disney Consumer Products.

But where Wayne lucked out was ... Well, just as he began speaking for Mickey, The Walt Disney Company (Thanks -- in large part -- to Les Perkins' efforts in establishing the Character Voice Department) decided that it was time that it selected one performer to be the official voice of each character. That way, the Goofy that appears in parades for the Parks would sound exactly the same as the Goofy that you'd see in Jello commercials on TV. That there'd then be a uniformity in performance style & sound.

And though a number of folks did audition to be Mickey's official voice, it was Allwine who eventually landed the gig. Not so much because he'd actually been mentored by MacDonald (these two worked together for years in Disney's sound department). But -- rather -- because Wayne took the job seriously. He understood what he'd been entrusted with with Mickey Mouse and always did what he could to protect this character.

"What do you mean by 'protect the character?'," you ask. Well, as the official voice of Mickey Mouse, Allwine spent over 30 years in recording sessions. Where he'd invariably be handed copy that had been prepared by some Marketing executive who had no idea how Mickey actually sounded. Which is why -- in an effort to make this 70-year-old Mouse sound hip, happening & now -- they'd have written dialogue that had Mickey using trendy slang or making off-color jokes.

And as he was rehearsing this material, Wayne would quickly identify the problem areas. And then -- as politely as possible -- he'd work with the director & sound engineer at that session to rectify these problems. Make sure that what was being recorded actually sounded like something that this timeless character might say.

Mind you, this isn't to say that Wayne wasn't up to a challenge. I remember talking with him once about his work in "The Prince and the Pauper." When I told Wayne how much I enjoyed his performance as the Prince in that featurette, how he had crafted a distinctly different character that still sounded like Mickey, the man lit up like a Christmas tree. "I'm so glad you noticed that," he said."I really tried to make Mickey and the Prince sound like two different characters."

Of course, when you talk about Wayne, you have to bring up Russi Taylor, the talented voice actress who played Minnie to Allwine's Mickey. Those two literally met in a recording booth and quickly became a couple in real life.

Now what was kind of funny about that is -- for the first couple of years after Wayne & Russi were wed -- The Walt Disney Company expressly forbid these two from mentioning to the press that they were a married couple. Reportedly out of fear over what might happen if Allwine & Taylor's marriage didn't last. Studio execs supposedly dreaded the headline: "Mickey & Minnie split up." (Which -- given this bizarre corporate edict -- led to the in-house joke that " ... theirs was a love that dare not squeak its name.")

Anyway ... Anyone who ever saw Wayne & Russi together knew that these two were never going to split up. They were so sweet, so into one another, this couple seemed to be joined at the hip. Allwine & Taylor would do radio interviews together, promotional appearances together. They were inseparable.

Which is why -- as other people talk about how sad it is that we've lost Wayne -- to be honest, my heart really goes out to Russi at this moment. I mean, this woman's career and personal life were all tied up in one incredibly sweet guy. I can't imagine what she's going through right now.

In closing ... I know that it might sound somewhat sacrilegious to say this, especially to Disneyana fans. But whenever I watch Mickey Mouse shorts from the 1930s now, I find myself thinking that Mickey doesn't sound quite right. That -- as Walt Disney performed this character back in the day -- his Mouse isn't warm enough. That Walt's performance as Mickey is a bit too one note.

That -- in the end -- may be the greatest compliment that one can pay Wayne Allwine. That the pupil eventually surpassed the master. That his performance of Mickey Mouse -- over time -- actually became better than the one Walt Disney did.

Though -- knowing Wayne -- he'd have been quick to dismiss that idea. As MacDonald once told Allwine as he was getting ready to record Mickey's voice back in the 1970s; "Just remember, kid. You're only filling in for the boss."

But that said, Mickey Mouse was always in good hands as long as Wayne Allwine was here.

You will be missed, friend I never met.

In an earlier post, I mentioned how Disneyland invoked such happy childhood memories of family. I therefore would like to offer you, the reader, some suggestions on how to make Disneyland (or any theme park) memorable (in a positive way) for your family. Being that my first trip to Disneyland with a little one is coming up in a week, this is advice I plan on taking as well! Remember, I am not a licensed therapist, psychologist, counselor, vacation planner, etc. This is just advice and tips from one friend to another.

Number One: Hold on to your child’s hand at all times. I have seen many lost children in the park and cannot imagine the panic racing through their minds as well as their parent’s minds. Just take a look at the entry lines before the park opens. Parents are already looking for their son or daughter! It is so easy for a child to get lost by just stopping to look at a display window on Main Street, USA when Mom and Dad keep walking to get to Splash Mountain as quick as possible. I could be wrong, but searching Disneyland for little Timmy and waiting for security to radio in to City Hall doesn’t sound like the happiest vacation on earth; especially when it could be avoided by something as simple as holding hands.

Number Two: Remember to rest. If your kids are cranky in the morning, imagine what it will be like three or four hours later. There are plenty of park benches to sit on and relax. The park does have a nifty readmission option as well. And hotel rooms are perfect for a little nap before a nice evening in the park. Remember: naps aren’t just for grumpy and tired children. They work for grumpy and tired mommies and daddies too!

Number Three: Don’t force children to go on rides. Now, I’m a new parent who has not yet taken my child to the park, but I’ve been a child. Therefore, I know this to be true: If Junior is screaming that he doesn’t want to go on a particular ride, chances are that he doesn’t want to go on that ride! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard, “STOP IT! YOU’RE GOING TO RIDE THIS AND YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE FUN, SO STOP CRYING RIGHT NOW!!!” Now really, can a child be ordered to have fun if he’s expecting to have the living daylights scared out of him? My parents never pressed the issue. The deal was, if I didn’t want to go, I didn’t have to go. If I wasn’t sure, I could just close my eyes and I would be protected by them.

On one trip I was standing in line for Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin behind a mother with a frightened and crying young boy. This poor child was screaming. Literally screaming. She finally told him he didn’t have to go on the ride, which caused his screaming to subside. I was so happy to hear that until it became obvious she was going to force him on the ride last minute. When they came to the entry point, she grabbed the boy and pulled him into the car with her, causing him to start screaming once more. At this point, the cast member working the load point informed the mother, “Mam, I’m afraid I can’t let you ride if your child is not calmed down.” I’m not sure if she ever noticed me mouth the words, “Thank You” to her, but her comments to the mother were greatly appreciated.

Most important, Number Four: Remember this trip is supposed to be fun! Especially if it’s your child’s first time, plan the trip with him or her in mind! If this means no Space Mountain and ten trips on It’s A Small World, so be it! If you want Disneyland to be as magical of a place for your children as it is for you, allow them to create their own memories. You may just find that your memories become even more magical! And after all, the Small World song is kind of catchy!

An Obituary

Unfortunately, sometimes the great ones get overlooked. Director Ken Annakin passed away on Wednesday, April 22nd. Mr Annakin was a great contributor to live action movies, both Disney and non-Disney made. If the name doesn't sound familiar, perhaps some of his movies do.

Missing An Old Friend

For nearly five years, I worked as a cast member at The Disney Store in Glendale, Arizona. When I was hired, I left a better paying job with more hours because, well, I would be working for Disney!

Was it worth it?

You bet.

My love for Disney grew into more than I could imagine it would. I made amazing friends. I learned the true value of guest service.I became knowledgeable enough in Disney Trivia to become a three time store champion. Most importantly, I met a young girl who would, a year and a half after I left, become my wife.

About a year ago, The Disney Store at Arrowhead Towne Center was closed for "remodeling" with an indefinite return date. Since then, an Apple Store has moved into the vacant spot, and no date has been set for a re-opening of The Disney Store anywhere else in the mall (due to the current economy, I can understand why). Tonight, I'm feeling a little melancholy. I miss the place.

I thought I'd include a few pictures from our last visit, shortly before I closed. I'm getting choked up as I type this (I know, I'm a sap) just thinking how if it weren't for that store, I wouldn't be holding the precious little one you see in the last picture.

A Sad Day In Disney History

On this day in 1994, Disney lost a true legend. Frank Wells, former President and COO of the Walt Disney Company, was tragically killed in a helicopter accident in Nevada at the young age of 62.

Wells was one of the driving forces in the turn around of the Disney Company in the 1980's. According to his Disney Legends profile:

"During his 10-year-tenure, Disney enjoyed unprecedented growth and revitalization with annual revenues up from $1.5 billion to $8.5 billion. Disney stocks increased a whopping 1,500 percent, while its theme parks and resorts revenues tripled. Disney Consumer Products revenues rose 13-fold, while its filmed entertainment revenues jumped 15-fold. Frank helped make Disney one of the most successful film studios in the world."

I would personally argue that the Eisner era enjoyed its greatest successes whil Wells was in tenure for the company. He seemed to be the "Roy" to Michael's "Walt."

Frank Wells was also quite an adventurer. In 1983, he set out to climb the highest mountain on each of the world's seven continents within a single year - a feat never before accomplished at that time. He scaled six, but was forced to turn back near the top of Mount Everest. His mountaineering exploits were chronicled in his book, "Seven Summits," published in 1986. His love of mountain climbing was paid tribute in the Matterhorn at Disneyland.

Mr Wells, you are missed.

I often wish I lived back in what I consider the "golden years" of Disney - mainly while Walt was still alive. Yes, his spirit lives on in so many different ways, but just to see interviews with the man...to turn on the TV and see him hosting the Disneyland TV show or Walt Disney Presents in their first runs....or to go to Disneyland and by some chance see him walking down Main Street, or knowing with the light on in his apartment, he was somewhere in the park...how awesome that must have been!

On Disneyland

Note: I found this little essay I wrote for my own entertainment value a few years back, and thought this (slightly updated) would be the perfect way to kick off my blog entries - enjoy!

It’s not like I live at Disneyland. In fact at last count I’ve been there a total of seventeen times, and nine of those seventeen have occurred in the five years that I’ve been married. It’s just that Disneyland has always been a part of me. In my blood, so to speak. My mother will volunteer the fact that I was conceived on a trip to Disneyland, a fact that just kind of freaks me out and for that reason, will not be discussed from here on out.

When I was younger, Disneyland was a favorite vacation destination for me. I can’t remember too much about those trips, I was a little too young. I do know that one of my family’s favorite photographs come from me being pushed in a stroller by Dale the chipmunk, screaming my little cute Mickey ears off. There are many other pictures of me at the park, but no real memories come of those.

The few things I do remember are little in the grand scheme of things. I remember my mom and dad making me and my sister lay down for a nap on a bench while my mom had iced tea and my dad had a vanilla milkshake, of which I got to have a sip of. A little thing, right? But here I am, 30 years old, and nothing tastes better to me than a vanilla milkshake from the happiest place on earth. (On a side note, on my last trip there in 2006, the Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor no longer sold shakes. I almost cried.)

I remember waking up on the floor of the hotel room, being told I had just rolled off in the middle of the night. (Just rolled off? I was sharing a bed with my older sister at the time, and I still suspect foul play.)

I remember riding my first roller coaster, The Matterhorn, with my dad. And it scared the living daylights out of me. He tried to get me to go on Space Mountain with him. He said I’d like it because it had cool pictures of the solar system as we were walking out. He almost had me sold on it as I was a pretty big astronomy buff, until I asked one more important question. "Does it have seat belts?" I asked him. No, he told me, just safety bars. "Then I’m not riding. Not until they have seat belts." I have since softened my stance on rides without seat belts, though I still won’t get into a car without one.

Perhaps the memory that stayed with me most, however, is that we went as a family. My parents divorced soon after our last family trip to Disneyland, and I wouldn’t get to go again for quite a few years. Nonetheless, when I think of my family being happy together, I think of our trips to Disneyland. I still think of family every time I go there. And I think Uncle Walt would be happy.
